The Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AAF) Agricultural Opportunity stream, also known as the Farmer’s Stream, is a provincial nominee program designed to attract experienced farmers and agri-food entrepreneurs to Alberta. This stream targets individuals with a strong agricultural background, encouraging them to establish or invest in farming businesses within the province. To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate sufficient farming experience, a viable business plan, a minimum net worth, and a commitment to actively manage and operate the agricultural enterprise in Alberta. Successful candidates receive a provincial nomination, enhancing their prospects of obtaining Canadian permanent residency, and contribute to the growth and sustainability of Alberta’s agricultural sector.
To be eligible for this stream, candidates must meet the following criterion at the time their application is mailed to the AAIP and at the time of assessment by the AAIP. Meeting these criteria does not guarantee a nomination or permanent residence.
Candidates must prove that they have farm management skills.
Proof of this may include, but is not limited to:
Candidates must be able to invest a minimum of CDN $500,000 of equity in a primary production farming business in Alberta.
Documents must be provided that show a minimum net worth of CDN $500,000, or confirmation of the ability to access a similar amount of funds from other sources.
Candidates may be required to show the ability to invest more than the minimum.
Candidates must document their investment plans in a proposed business plan and submit this with their application to the AAIP. The proposed business plan will be reviewed by Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation to ensure the farming operation aligns with Alberta farming industry requirements.
Applications representing the best opportunity for growth relevant to Alberta’s agri-food targets will be given priority.

Saskatchewan Farmer’s Stream was a specific immigration pathway within the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) designed for experienced farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs who wished to establish a farming operation in Saskatchewan, Canada. Please note that program requirements and details may change over time, so it’s essential to refer to the official website of the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program or consult with an immigration expert for the most up-to-date information. However, here are some specific requirements that were in place as of my last update:
Farm Ownership Experience: To be eligible for the Farmer’s Stream, applicants typically needed to have a minimum of three years of farm ownership, operation, or management experience. This experience should be verifiable through documentation.
Farming Proposal: Applicants were required to submit a detailed and comprehensive farming proposal outlining their plans to establish a farming operation in Saskatchewan. This proposal should include information about the type of farming operation, investment plans, and how it would benefit the province.
Net Worth: Applicants were usually required to have a minimum net worth, which could vary depending on factors such as location and size of the farming operation. The net worth requirement was intended to demonstrate the applicant’s financial capacity to establish and operate a successful farm in Saskatchewan.
Refundable Cash Deposit: Some applicants might be required to make a refundable cash deposit as a commitment to starting and operating their farming business in Saskatchewan. This deposit could be returned to the applicant after specific conditions were met.
Language Proficiency: Adequate language proficiency in English or French was typically required to ensure effective communication in the province.
Intention to Live in Saskatchewan: Applicants were generally required to demonstrate their genuine intention to live and establish their farming business in Saskatchewan.
Legal Status in Home Country: Applicants needed to have legal status in their home country, and their intention should be to move to Canada and settle in Saskatchewan.
Exploratory Visit: Some applicants might be required to conduct an exploratory visit to Saskatchewan to assess farming opportunities and become familiar with the province.
Again, please note that program requirements can change, and new policies may have been implemented since my last update. It’s crucial to verify the current eligibility criteria and application process on the official SINP website or consult with an immigration expert for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
